Who I Want to Be? A Brief Reflection on Life.

In order to find out who I want to be in life, it is important that I first stop and ask myself the following questions. Who am I? Does it make sense to live? Only then I can start looking for the answer to the question.

Who Am I?

For how many of you was this one of the first philosophical questions you ever thought about? As a little boy I often looked in a mirror and asked myself: “Who is the person I see in there? Why do I feel separated from that person? Why is it that what seems to be me is in this body and not in another one?” I didn’t know the answers to these questions which led me into a high state of depression. I didn’t understand what I was doing here at all! I wasn’t happy and I wondered why I cannot be somebody else.

Who am I? Although it is a simple question, it is much more complicated to find and truly understand the answer for it. What is your perspective? Would you have an answer to that question? And do you know who you really are? If not, let’s leave the philosophy class for some other time because there is another and more simple way to live.

To Be or Not to Be?

Wait a second… you do not know who you are? So how can you live? What is the meaning of life when we don’t know who we are and what we are doing here? I think the meaning of life is one of the most important things we should be clear about. It isn’t that important what exactly the meaning of our life is but it is the fact that we have it and we know about it.

I know you’ve already found your sense of life. You wouldn’t read this post otherwise. So what keeps you alive? Why is life so important to you? Are you saying that you are still looking for your purpose? Let’s seek together for inspiration by looking at some possible meanings of living.

Meaning of Life

My life’s purpose is to believe, serve and follow something that is greater than myself. Such meaning can be found in most religions. It is a service to God who can take form in many ways depending on a religion. What can be better than serving and idealize someone who represents perfection itself? Someone who has reached a state in which he has a deep understanding for all the beings and speaks the language of truth and love?

loving family

I believe in family. We came to this world with the help of our father and mother, and so our life-long bond, called the family, was created. This bond has left us with a lot of positive experiences. We want to continue this cycle and extend this positivity to the next generations. There is no feeling which would be more beautiful than to give birth to a new human being. Whoever the human being is, it is worth living for him/her.

I want to be… a garbage collector, an astronaut, a teacher, a youtuber. I would like to help others. I want to live for someone who will appreciate me. I’d like to live the dream that I have always dreamed of as a kid.

My Life’s Purpose

And what is my life goal? Do you remember those times when we were little kids playing outside in the sandbox and knew nothing but fun? Our biggest concern was that we had to go home, or that the kid next to us had a great mud pie that we didn’t have. It was a time full of fun and freedom.

No, we didn’t want to stay like that, we all wanted to grow up and be like our parents. The truth is that even though I wanted to be older and earn my own money, it was clear to me that being in kindergarten is the greatest time we will ever experience. But why not stay in this state?

When I reassessed my life a few years ago, I came to the conclusion that my life’s goal does not differ from the one I had when I was a child. I would like to be happy. What is the purpose of life, if we do not have the time to enjoy it? Times when we are in a constant stress, depression and when we are full of negative emotions? Who’s behind it and how do we feel about it? Well, it is ourselves.

Life is just a game, so let’s play it together and be happy.
